368 Jemima St, Selkirk, MB
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE AT NOVEMBER 27 2024
This holiday season the Daily Bread Soup Kitchen in Selkirk invites members of the community to remember those who need a at least one meal a day to support the soup kitchen with funds and/or food. Beginning December 3 and extending to December 31, Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen is celebrating the holiday season by reminding people to help those less fortunate.
On Thursday, December 19, the Daily Bread Soup Kitchen in Selkirk will serve more than 250 people a traditional holiday feast. Each week the volunteers at the soup kitchen serve lunch to more than 400 people from the age of two to 80+. In 2023 they served more than 20,000 meals. Since opening their doors in 1991 they have served more than one million meals!
“As the only soup kitchen in the City of Selkirk and a registered charity, we need funds and food (but not turkeys; as we are grateful to Baron’s Meats and Deli who prepare our turkeys for us); but we need contributions throughout the year to serve our clients”, commented Beverly Terhorst, Chair of the Board of Directors.
If you are thinking about helping a local charity please remember Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen, please contact www.ourdailybreadselkirk.com; or call Barb at 204.754.0258; our address is: Memorial Hall, 368 Jemima Street, Selkirk, MB, R1A 2B1; mailing address: Box 123, Selkirk, MB, R1A 2B1. We thank you in advance.
Giving Tuesday
This year the soup kitchen chose to celebrate Giving Tuesday, the world’s largest generosity movement. It started in the US in 2012 as a day to encourage people to do something good. Since then, it has spread internationally to inspire people to give, collaborate and celebrate generosity.
Giving Tuesday started in Canada in 2013, when Canada Helps initiated the program.
The Daily Bread Soup Kitchen in Selkirk
Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen is a volunteer staffed, non-profit, registered charitable organization. Sadly, food insecurity means many of those in our community eat only one meal a day. We operate Monday to Friday, 12 months of the year. Lunch is prepared (homemade soup in our kitchen) and served from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Volunteers make up the heart and soul of the soup kitchen, without their commitment the soup kitchen will not continue. We are sustained by the compassionate and committed contributions of our donors.

Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen is a volunteer staffed, non-profit, registered charitable organization which, in 2021, provided over 26,000 free meals to the needy in our community. Monday to Friday, 12 months of the year we prepare a lunch, served from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas we prepare a special meal served by our volunteers. During our Thanksgiving and Christmas lunches we distribute scarves, mitts and hats that were knitted or donated by people from Selkirk and Winnipeg.
We provide 30 meals for Youth for Christ, three days a week during the school year. Youth for Christ runs a lunch time program for kids from the middle years school. We also provide funding to the Selkirk school breakfast programs.
Volunteers make up the heart and soul of the soup kitchen, without their commitment the soup kitchen could not continue. We are sustained by compassionate, committed volunteers and the contributions of our donors.
On occasion we host a Sunday breakfast prepared by church groups or other organizations.

Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen evolved from a local person who saw the need in the City of Selkirk and began serving meals from her home. The City of Selkirk donated space in the Memorial Hall where it continues to this day.
Rene Gauthier started as a volunteer and in time became the chairperson of the soup kitchen. He volunteered for 18 years. Rene grew the volunteer base in the community and by the time he retired in 2018 the soup kitchen had approx. 25 volunteers and was serving a lunch 5 days a week.
Barbara and Beverly, who started as volunteers in 2015 became co-chairs when Rene retired.
The soup kitchen relies on donations from the community to continue our goal of providing food for the hungry. For some of our clients the meal they have at lunch today is their only meal for the day.
